Accessibility indicates the capacity of the highest possible number of people to access the internet and its contents, regardless of the common limitations of individuals or of those that result from the context in which it is used. Its main aim is to guarantee access to the internet for people with any kind of handicap, disability or disablement and to ensure that they can browse without any problems.
It is very important that we create spaces on the internet that are accessible to everyone in order to provide fair access and equal opportunities for the disabled. An accessible web page means that people with a handicap, disability or disablement or the elderly can enjoy the contents and information on the internet and have the chance to interact and play a more active role in society.
Having an accessible Web site is something that definitely benefits absolutely all of us. By designing it in accordance with accessibility standards, we are contributing to the social integration of the disabled or the elderly and we favour the non-discrimination of those people who usually come up against too many obstacles on the Internet.
As well as making it possible for the aforementioned groups to gain access, an accessible web site increases the scope and communicative capacity of the web page, improves its usability and search engine print outs, permits device independence, the content is reusable for multiple formats and devices, improves efficiency and shows social responsibility.
Among the recommendations regarding accessibility there are various points to be fulfilled. Three levels of compliance (A, AA and AAA) have been defined initially that have various verification points:
The Gureak Group web page, that complies with AAA level, is one of the web pages in the Basque Country that has a total accessibility certificate.
El World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), founded in 1994 with the aim of discussing, reaching a consensus on, creating and disseminating web standards, created the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) which has defined a series of criteria, guides, techniques and recommendations in order to disseminate the principles of web accessibility among companies, governments, institutions, developers and users.
